Song of the Week: The Savoy Orpheans, Baby Face (1926)

Every once in a while (and I’m sure it happens to you too) I find a song remembered from my younger days going obsessively around my head, impossible to shake.  Today it has been a recording from my one of my favourite British dance orchestras of the 1920s, The Savoy Orpheans, resident dance band at the Savoy Hotel, London, between 1923 and 1927. The song, Baby Face, had been written earlier that year, music by Harry Akst, lyrics by Benny Davis; and has been recorded many times since, by stars as various as Little Richard and the Muppets.  But I confess an enduring affection for this very early version.
